Located in Marshall County in northeastern Alabama, Grant is a small community of less than one thousand people. In Grant, a scenic little mountain hamlet, residents enjoy a life rich in outdoor adventure as part of daily living in the Appalachian Mountains and nearby lakes and rivers. Cathedral Caverns, a well known and historical cave, is also located nearby.
Perched atop Gunter Mountain, the town of Grant was established when a post office named after President Ulysses S. Grant and meant to serve scattered residents of the area was constructed on the town's site. Because of this first sign of "community" and modernity, additional settlers followed and eventually the town became organized and populous enough for formal recognition. In 1945, the town of Grant, named after that original post office and the President, was added to American maps as an incorporated entity.
Schools
Grant is home to the only school in the United States which is fully owned by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Started in the late 1920's, the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School serves the area's children from kindergarten to 12th grade as part of an academic commitment to excellence. The school is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
